I do my work, whether sculpture, weaving or paint, outdoors in open air. There, the distractions that interrupt the flow usually have something to add, influencing the piece in process; Therefor sunshine, shadow, wind, season, and sometimes a passerby, human and/or otherwise, all play roles. Being open to stimulus while in the process of manifestation has become an essential part of my art. Allowing things to change, to end differently than first conceptualized, has revealed more beauty and magic than I’ve felt possible without. .
Kinetic works of balance and patience. I never use adhesives or fasteners when creating the "Machines". Sticks and twigs, limbs and branches are manipulated while living and left to grow, cut free into graceful arches, circles, and radical angles all waiting to be incorporated with what natures path provides. Vines of jasmine, wild grape, kudzu, and ivy find their way into intuitive, reactionary forms arrested in time.
During the Covid shutdown I struggled with excessive spare time vs. boredom. This series of work gave purpose to idle hands. Look closely and you will see nothing is perfect, nothing square, nothing exactly round, and nothing right where it should be.
If you absorb the entire eight square feet, a painting of 10's of thousands of strokes, squares, circles, all imperfect, perfectly come together.
